Health and nutrition today

There has been an ongoing debate about what the perfect diet and nutrition intake is since forever. Dieticians, scientists, and medical professionals are always trying to steer our attention to specific diets and/or nutritional plans, and for some of us they work tremendously well. For others, however, it can take a lot of trial and error before finding the perfect diet and nutritional balance. Nutrition is an essential element in a healthy life, but it is also unfortunately one that is often overlooked or simply disregarded.

Adequate attention and overall focus on what we put into our bodies is something that is too often underestimated, and the results can be incredibly unhealthy and unsustainable to maintain over time without health risks and possible impairments. So, what does one have to do to ensure they are giving their body the best they possibly can? Every person is different, but the good news is that there are a few key points that are the building blocks of finding and then maintaining a healthy life.

Take your vitamins (and your minerals)

Sometimes no matter how hard we try, we do not get all the nutrients that our bodies need from our dietary intake. Whether the underlying cause is intolerances or personal taste (or any other number of things, for that matter), sometimes our bodies require a little bit of help. Buying supplements and vitamins from companies like Douglas Labs, for example, does wonders for the body and allows our bodies to perform at their best, every time, without exception (for the most part).

Take control of your dietary intake

It has been said time and again, that “you are what you eat”. While the body needs fats and sugars as well as proteins and minerals to function, there are good kinds of these nutrients and there are bad kinds. Opting for the healthy, unprocessed (or “whole”) foods and drinks is a sure-fire way to boost the body’s health perception and kick physical health into high gear. Switching out unhealthy fats like processed meats and the like for healthy fats like avocado and certain types of fish (salmon, for example) is a simple way to instil a positive change.

Take note of your body’s response

As fantastic as it would be if our bodies all responded to different foods and drinks the same way, we do not. Not only are food intolerances important to take note of, but so is the body’s response to different types and amounts of foods and drinks. You might not have a medically-diagnosed intolerance to a food, but if you bloat (painfully or not), feel sick in your gut, or have low energy levels after eating certain foods – especially during a main meal – then try eliminating that food from your diet. If the bloating lessons or dissipates entirely, if your stomach no longer hurts, and if you have more energy, you are making the right steps. And if it doesn’t help? Well, now you know, and you can keep eating those foods.
