There were so many moving pieces that I had to figure out where to put and I felt like I had not nearly enough time to be able to realistically figure it all out. This was a time where I was facing a lot of endings and beginnings in my life. I was leaving home for the first time, I had just finished high school, I had left my first part time job. I was choosing which university to go to - a university that, seeing as I was going to live on campus, would be my home for the next four years. Now, education is also reimagining itself to realign with the way of a changing world, and in the process it is preparing students for the workforce they will enter into once they graduate – a workforce that is becoming exceedingly digital as time goes on.

The world is going digital

It is no secret that the world is becoming exceedingly digitally-inclined. We live in a world that is made to our own specific designs, and we are the masters of our universe. Digital inclination is part of the package, and the more and more that we come to grips with, and further advance, our technological reaches, the more hinged on those reaches the world around us – and we ourselves – become. It is the way of the world, and we are in control of that world, definitively and without exception. Everything from education and entertainment, to healthcare and the workforce, is changing thanks to technology.

Modern education realigning with the gravitational shift of the rest of the world

So, the world is digitally-inclined, and continues to become even more so as time goes on. Now, education is a historically traditional industry in its own right, but in recent years it has been somewhat forced to realign its models and methods so that it coincides once again with the way of the rest of the world. Technological disruption hit the education industry on a global scale not too long ago, and ever since education has been taking on more and more technological innovations (think online learning, digital assessment submissions, and the virtual classroom, for example).

Modern education prepares students for digital workforce

With the whole world steadily becoming more digitally-focused, it should come as little surprise that the workforce is becoming more focused on digitalisation as well. In fact, we are well on the way to coming face to face with a digital workforce. Interestingly, it seems that the changes in education are perfectly timed to evolve with the changing workforce. The students that are going through the education system today are being equipped with technological innovations and a remote learning alternative, and these concepts of modern education are perfect segways into the digital workforce that is coming into play more and more – a workforce where digital innovations even remote career paths and job opportunities are more common than ever. The future of the workforce is decidedly digital, and modern education is the perfect preparation tank for students to get them ready to dive into it.

We are an adaptive species, and how we approach our academic standing is no different. We hold immense pride in our academic integrity, and we always want to be the best that we can be. Generation after generation, this is the glue that binds us together in our formative years. The student experience changes, of course, as the world evolves. Adaptation at its finest, our ability to cater the learning experience towards what makes the most sense for current students is one of our greatest strengths and tools towards our species’ progression.

In this digital age that we currently exist in, students are finding themselves more comfortable with digital devices than they are with paperback materials, and so their entire expectation of their academic experience has fundamentally changed. This is just as well, really. The workforce is increasingly changing and opting towards a digital future, and this is the workforce that these students will be entering from their graduations. Everything from professional corporate training to the tools they use to complete their daily work is becoming more digitally-inclined at an exceedingly rapid pace. The world is changing. The workforce is evolving. And students are growing.

Students today are the first generations to have grown up in a world that is quite literally immersed in, and surrounded by, technological advancement and sturdy digitalisation. Since the time of their birth, they are in environments that have more tech and digital devices than ever. They grow up learning how to interact with and utilise it all. And because of this, they learn differently than the students who came before them. Traditionally, education has been all about classroom mannerisms and paperback materials. These days, students still learn this way of course, but they are finding that the education industry knows that they, like all generations before them, learn best when items they are familiar with are incorporated into their learning tactics. And so, here we are.

The student experience today is all about learning the value of traditional education and enhancing it through digitalisation and technological advancements. Students today learn best with the assistance of digital devices, because that is what they are so familiar with. There is great value in embracing digital learning tools. Not only are they incredibly efficient and fast, but they also allow students to be able to use them with little to no kickback. This means that students can use them time and again, without the weight of paper materials in their bags, and the strain of carrying them around. Digital devices like tablets and laptops – and even smartphones – allow students to have a world of information in their pockets or their bags, with the weightlessness that has made digitalisation so popular.

Generation after generation have made their way through education systems around the world that were centred around classroom engagement, set assessment models, and a one-system-fits-all method. Of course, this education system was not necessarily broken, but it was fundamentally flawed. The reality is that each student is an individual, and as such they all have different ways of engaging and learning – ways that, dependent on the student in question, do not always align with traditional education methods and models. The solution has taken some time, some trial and error, to perfect, but it has come in the form of technological advancement and online learning.

The rise of online learning brought with it the breakdown of barriers to globally inclusive education, and the results have spoken for themselves time and again, having proven themselves to be valuable. There is something profoundly intriguing in the evolution of education. While of course there are students who thrive and perform at their peak through traditional education methods and models, there are other students who perform best through online education systems. Whether the course content is a bachelor in the arts, a DevOps masters' program, or anything in between and surrounding, one fact remains true and consistent: every student will have their own capabilities and learning preferences. Online education being added into the mix allows students to indulge those preferences.

Traditional education is beneficial for students who thrive on set scheduling and a strict learning system that is derived in the traditional brick and mortar classroom. Students who learn best via traditional education learn the value of respecting time management and scheduling, patience, and determination. It can be a challenge to keep up with the masses in a crowded classroom for some, but for many being in the classroom allows students the benefit of engaging and learning in real-time, and being able to have immediate access to the assistance of both educators and fellow students. In this way, traditional learning has an advantage over online education.

On the other hand, online education is extremely beneficial for students who thrive on being able to work their education around their lifestyle and their other commitments, rather than having to sacrifice everything else in life for their education during their time as a student. Students that study online are in direct control of their success and their progress, and as a result their academic results are the product of their accountability and determination, and not the rest of a strict scheduled academic experience. Students who study online can do so in between shifts and everyday movements, and they still have access to all the same materials – just through a screen and not necessarily in person.

In the end, traditional education and online education both carry the same methods and models. It is just the delivery that is different depending on which a student opts for. Having both traditional and modern learning methods and models in place allows for a globally inclusive learning environment, and as a result millions more students are enrolling and shifting towards academic success. This is an exciting and powerful time for the world of education, and it is only set to get even better over time.

The education sector has done its best to keep a firm grasp on the (outdated) learning models that have served it so well up until now. To be blunt, the education industry, like the rest of the world, must evolve with the way that the world is moving. Because we are more technologically inclined than ever before, the way that our industries function must evolve to embrace this technology as well.

The rise of distance education (learning based online) has been a long one, with many challenges and trials along the way. In decades’ past, learning was limited geographically. This was not necessarily an intentional movement, but nonetheless it created a decidedly divisive environment – one in which individuals who wanted to learn were not given the opportunity unless they either made the journey (no matter how long) to campus, or taught themselves. Distance education has come at a time where the education system desperately needed the liveliness of technological disruption, and solved the geography issue. Now, thanks to distance education, students anywhere can take courses and earn themselves a degree, so long as they have access to a steady Wifi connection.

The individuals going through the education system currently have a keen interest and reliance on technology. Not only do these students have a familiarity with technological advancement and digitalisation in their everyday lives, but they also have a keen understanding of the reality that the world is going to be driven by digitalisation quite soon. So, these students naturally demand an educational experience that mimics that reality, and that can adequately prepare them for life after graduation, as they go into the workforce.

Community colleges have been the pioneering forces of the development and steady introduction of online learning, and as the learning initiative gained more traction and steadily became a modern force in education, distance education slowly became more and more popular. Investments in online education are tipped to rise to a historical $9.5 billion in the coming years, and this reality has transformed the way that distance education is approached – even by the very same schools that pushed against it so hard when it first came to fruition.

The magic about distance education is that it effectively tears down one of the biggest barriers that traditional education never could: worldwide geographical inclusion. The rise of distance education speaks volumes about the impact that main industries evolving with the times can have – for all parties.

While traditional education still does – and always will – have its place in the global academic landscape, the realm of online education has broken down the barriers that withheld the education industry from truly succeeding to its full potential in previous years.

As long as they have access to a steady Wifi connection and a device to use, modern (and future) students have a world of academic possibility wide open to them. Students today are busier than ever, and as such they struggle to balance demanding education schedules, work, family time, moments with friends, and personal space – and everything else in between. Traditional education works wonders for thousands of students annually, but there are thousands more who either drop out, spend their time as a student stressed out of their mind, or change their mind multiple times before finally landing on a degree they commit to long enough to successfully graduate.

The magic in online education, the glue that makes it such a benefit for the global academic industry, is that it eliminates barriers that previously caused significant issues. Firstly, traditional education meant that students had to travel to brick and mortar campuses to be able to attend their classes – many of which were marked, at least partially, by attendance. Those that failed to go to their classes failed their courses, rendering the point of study moot. And secondly, traditional education often (depending on where in the world one lives) demands that classes be paid for before the commencement of each semester. Each of these fine points mean that students access is somewhat exclusive.

What online education has brought to the industry is inclusivity on an unprecedented scale. Students who struggle with the ideals of traditional education are given the opportunity to have full access to education through online education programs. Students can be anywhere in the world, and payment plans are often included as well, making online education the perfect academic option for students who want to expand their academic reaches but do not have the geographical or financial means to study traditionally, as well as being able to study on their own time, effectively allowing them to work in their education around their lifestyle and not the other way around, as is so often the case with traditional education.
